Question for all the umpires on here.

If an umpire determines a player has missed a base, in this case home plate, and she enters the dugout is he obligated to call her out or does it require the play to be challenged by the defensive team?

My perception is that the rule book states she should be called out proactively but in practice , aka unwritten rule, they typically will not make that call.

To be clear I’m not upset because it was a great teaching moment for a 9 year old. For what it’s worth when viewing on video it is difficult to say if she did or did not make contact because she swiped her door over.

Figure I will need to know for sure in the future.

Thanks.

I'm sure my friend Steve will help us out here but the rules are pretty clear. This is an appeal play. A runner passing a base is assumed to have touched the base in the absence of an appeal. This runner passes home, goes in the dugout and the defense doesn't make an appeal before the next pitch then she is safe.

Thanks - your answer doesn't surprise me. Definitely adds to the reasons I'm not a fan of that umpire. Getting the same guy in 4 of your 5 games seems to make for frustration eventually.

PS - I just saw my typo...she swiped her FOOT over, we don't make them run with doors...some have them do have piano's on their backs though.
